Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
What is BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art whose central theme is the skill of controlling and resisting your opponent in ways that force him to submit, often using an arsenal of devastating ground based manouvres such as choke holds and joint manipulations. Due to the fact that control is generally easier on the ground than in a standing position, much of the techniques of BJJ is centered round the skill of taking an opponent down to the ground and wrestling for dominant control positions from there the opponent can be rendered harmless.
The ability for a smaller, weaker person to overcome a stronger more aggressive opponent is an important element of the sport. This is done by utilising superior leverage, grip and position upon your opponent. Students of the sport gain a deep understanding of the workings and limits of the human body. This knowledge can be used to subdue and control an opponent with whatever level of severity the student chooses. The path to this knowledge is physically and mentally demanding. Students benefit from greatly increased physical fitness, problem-solving ability, self-knowledge of their body and mind and the many social benefits of working within a team of other students.
Many students first learn about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through the ever increasing popularity of mixed martial arts (MMA) competition, where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques are very prominent. The practice of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a sport however, is strongly separated from MMA and classes do not feature kicking or punching. Claudio Silva does offer MMA Classes aside from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes.

About MMA Classes
In the past 18 years, mixed martial arts, MMA has left the underground world and has become mainstream. One of the largest and fastest-growing organizers of mixed martial arts is the Ultimate Fighting Championship, or UFC was started in 1993. Fighters battle it out in a cage with minimal equipment on. During the matches, mixed martial arts fighters only wear thin gloves, and are barefoot. Fighters are allowed to punch, kick, grab or do anything else to their opponents to win the matches. This stays true to the sports Brazilian fighting roots of Vale Tudo, which translates into English as “anything goes.”
The few rules that the sport does have are similar to boxing and wrestling. Fighters can win a mixed martial arts match by three different ways. A fighter can knockout or hold into submission his opponent, or win by a judge’s decision.
